Melbourne to Cairns area via Newell Hwy, Carnarvon NP, Eungella NP. Return via Julia Creek, Quilpie, Lake Bindagolly. 2010

Spent the morning packing, booked in to get the BCC skin cancer taken out of my leg upon my return from the trip, set off at 13.30. Drove to The Rock and camped at the shelter. Realized we’d left the stove behind, there is a push-button BBQ at the shelter so used that to cook dinner.
6/6 570k
Up a bit late, added Speckled Warbler and Red-capped Robin to the list, drove to Gum Swamp near Forbes and got Freckled Duck, White-bellied Sea Eagle, Blue-billed Duck, Peregrine Falcon, had lunch and drove to Dubbo, got fuel, doing 10L/100k, but the engine has a worrying tic at idle. Got a new stove $65. Drove to Gunneemooroo camp in the Warrumbungles arriving at dark.
7/6 350k
Got some Red-winged Parrots at farmhouse & ruin west of Warrumbungles, apart from them not much of interest today as we surveyed dam near Magometon Quarry, Castlereagh River south of Walgett, Walgett town pool area, Barwon River west of Walgett, Coocoran Lake and camped at Lake Angledool, both lakes were flooding, and all the sites had water. Got the tent up and dinner cooked before the mozzies descended, did puzzles til 19.30, bed.
8/6 470k
The lake was productive, as were several creek crossings, the first at Narran River then at Balonne River, the best spot was at Kia Ora Irrigation & wetland just south of St George. In Roma Bev got in contact with Sargent 4×4 hire and found that they have given her the CSO job. Drove to just north of Injune and stopped at Hutton Ck at 17.30. Very few mozzies unlike last night. Bed 20.00.
9/6 800k
On the road by 8.00 in to Carnarvon Gorge, nice drive in and nice looking river, but pretty ordinary birding. Drove up to Consuelo Ck Rewan Rd and had lunch, went to Fairbairn Dam at Emerald, too park like for good birding, then a long drive into the dark via mines with all the mining vehicles on the road, to Nebo, had trouble finding the road in the dark, ended up going too far then couldn’t find a camping spot, drove up Mt Adder rd for 15k, eventually found a flat spot big enough to pitch the tent, bed 22.00
10/6 125k
Overnight the fridge ran out of gas, I smelt gas, so there may have been a leak, so the new fridge is a bit of a flop. Had some finches get away from me; otherwise there wasn’t much in the morning. Up the other track found a nice creek with a flat spot at Mt Britton Tk at creek, that would have been nicer to camp at, got Scarlet Honeyeater, and had breaky, went in to Eungella the back way, one creek was alive with birds at Eungella Dam Tk at creek. Got to Broken River in the NP at 10.00, got Spectacled Monarch, Wompoo Pigeon. Had a look at Cedar Grove Tk, then we picked up ice to put in the fridge because we couldn’t get any gas in Eungella, which meant that we bought some fish and chips for dinner in Eungella settlement, then drove down to Finch Hatton to camp, not much on the track in the eve.
11/6 105k
Up too late, by the time Bev got organised the birds had all gone quiet, even more quiet than yesterday’s spots up the top. Bev annoyed me by not making it to the end of the track, I waited for ages for her, and eventually turned back, and found her sitting half way back, she didn’t come to the other pool either. We went to 2 large dams for the arvo, good value with birds like Barred Cuckoo-shrike, Chestnut-breasted Mannikins, and White-rumped Swiftlet at Teemburra Dam and Comb-crested Jacana and Wandering Whistling Duck at Kinchant Dam. Into Mackay to the caravan park, and got our little patch of grass for $22 a night. They had a kitchen so Bev cooked dinner in there since we haven’t filled up the gas bottle yet and of course we had a nice hot shower.
12/6 58k
Up a bit late and had a wander around the caravan park and surrounds, had heard Bush Stone-curlew over night, added Nutmeg Mannikin and Buff-banded Rail. RACQ was closed, did some shopping and out to Harbour Beach for lunch, not much chop. Back to get changed and out to the wedding of my niece Erin to Blair. Bit windy out in the open, sat around in the motel area until the reception and met people I’d forgotten who told me of my exploits as a mango picker that I still can’t remember many years ago. A pleasant evening, back to the tent at 22.30
13/6 471k
Headed to Nebo then Bee Ck, and Lake Elphinstone NW corner, along the Suttor Development Rd stopping at Suttor River, through Mount Coolon and the took back road to the Lake Dalrymple dam stopping at a cattle dam SE of Bungobine Ck, and Water Pipe Dam. We found that the dam was overflowing and they had closed the road at the dam, so had to back-track 40k because they had no sign letting me know it was a no through road. We didn’t make it back to the bitumen before nightfall and camped at 9km east of Caerphilly Homestead on the Scartwater road.
14/6 667k
The forest was just waking up as we left, got ground Cuckoo-shrike, out to main road. Stopped at the Cape River, through Charters Towers and on to Clarke River for lunch and made it to the Graham’s by 17.00 Graham did his feeding on the rails of the deck and Bev got all the expected birds, after dinner we went spotlighting and saw Lumholtz’s Tree-kangaroo, Lemuroid Ring-tailed Possum, and the local sub-species of the Brush-tailed Possum. bed 22.00. Got Bev’s first Squatter Pigeon during the day.
15/6 125k
We had breaky with Graham then wandered around, adding a few more birds to the Seamark Rd site, a tree kangaroo came down to the roof of the deck just 4m from us. Went to Hastie’s Swamp for lunch, quite poor variety, to Kingfisher Grove, $26 per night, wandered around the gardens with the mozzies, watched a battle of the birds in the creek.
16/6 123k
Heard a Lesser Sooty Owl last night, on my morning round got a Graceful Honeyeater. Went to Abattoir Swamp, not much using it but in the Hunter ck got Shinning Flycatcher and a poor look at a Yellow-breasted Boatbill. Went up to Mount Carbine Dam found a way around the back via the cemetery, got a Glossy Ibis and Little Bronze Cuckoo, that I think is my 600th Australian bird. Had lunch after walking around the dam. Down to Lake Mitchell which had an Osprey, at nearby Big Mitchell Ck got a White-browed Robin, found a tick in the car and then found a lump on the back of my head, Bev had a look at it, and we asked the people at the lodge, they said there wasn’t much to worry about, had a look but couldn’t find any more.
17/6 121k
Up too late, but the owner showed me a Papuan Frogmouth, left at 9.00, got a Bassian Thrush at Mt Lewis 1 on the way up Mt Lewis, the walk at the top along Mt Lewis dam walk was a bit quiet, got good views of Fernwren, lunch at the top. Down the Captain Cook Drive into Cairns, met up with the Secombe’s and chatted for a while. Went to the caravan park $86 for 3 nights. The tent is still wet from 2 days of intermittent overnight showers, did some shopping. Whilst Bev was cooking a Bush Stone-curlew wandered in to the camp kitchen, I’d heard they were tame here but that’s ridiculous, for such a usually shy bird .
18/6 27k
Had a Black Butcherbird around the camp this morning. Went to the mangrove boardwalk, but it was very quiet, the southern section had tall mangroves with a few birds including a Shinning Flycatcher. To Redden Island where the highlight was a Noisy Pitta, there were some waders on the beach and a Mangrove Heron. Went back to the Esplanade south until dark, the tide was mostly in, so the birds were close including some Great Knots.
19/6 13k
Heard Double-eyed Fig-parrot before dawn but took too long to get up then went down to the Esplanade til 11.00 and went to see the Secombe’s in their flat at the Aquarius, then went next door for lunch at the RSL with them, fell asleep on the balcony afterwards. had a late arvo look at the mangroves at the Esplanade north and got Mangrove Robin, which cost me an ice cream since Bev positively identified it before me. Bed early.
20/6 471k
Up 4.30, dropped Bev off at the airport so she could go back to work, I went back packed up and left the camp at 6.00. Out to Mareeba stopping at Davies Ck along the way, and just before Herberton at Cherry Tree Ck did a survey and got a Pacific Baza. I took a very pleasant drive along the Silver Valley Rd SW of Herbeton and stopped at Silver Valley Ck. As I got into cattle country as the day wore on the quality of the birds decreased, stopping at Smiths Ck SW Mount Garnet, Duck Dam Undara, Undara Resort Lodge, Junction Ck W of Mount Surprise, Got to Cumberland Dam at 15.30 and got the best campsite, found 45 species before dark.
21/6 576k
The day started off pleasantly enough with a few more birds added to the list including Black-throated Finch. Headed west and stopped at Venture Ck, filled up in Croydon and eventually found the track to Julia Creek, found a little wetland just south of Croydon. The road punted me a longer way around west than I’d liked but I kept going along Coralie Rd, stopped at a dam south of Coaralie and the bush wasn’t bad until I got to the Norman River and turned south. The river and its tributaries were what I was aiming for, but instead of quality bush I was confronted by a mess as the cattle have access to every drop of water, and had destroyed the habitat. There were still birds in the bushes but the contrast to Cumberland Dam was stark. Stopped at south of Vena Hills Station for Little Eagle and Grey Goshawk, 2 waterholes south of Iffley had Australian Pratincole, and Saxby River. As the day wore on I got more and more frustrated with having herds of cattle every 500m or so, I eventually made a mistake and hit one of them, it collapsed in front of me and I was on top of it before I knew what had happened, the unfortunate cow lay in the middle of the track as I drove off, things didn’t improve and later I hit a second cow, between the two hits I’d bent my bull bar and driving lights. It was a relief to get out of that horrible cattle infested land to Julia Creek and fill up the tank. Kept on heading south and not far south I camped at Eastern Ck where I had a nice campfire and relaxed after a depressing day.
22/6 586k
Had a more pleasant day today, up early and went to Combo waterhole, very quiet except finding that I was back in White-plumed Honeyeater territory. Took the back road stopping at Combo Rd at some dams, got some Budgerigars and Cockatiels at Combo Rd Bendemeer Station. The road eventually led back to the highway. The road to Longreach was pretty boring, got more go juice here. Camped at Broadwater camp in Lochern NP, got in early enough to set up camp and campfire before dark and relaxed by the water.

                CULL A COW A DAY

Cull a cow a day
Bash a bull
Mangle a Myna
Strangle a starling
But cull a cow a day
Come on all you militant greenies
Cull a cow a day
Bash a bull
Choke a chook
Grind a goose
But cull a cow a day
The things are fouling up the country
Come on everybody
Cull a cow a day
Bash a bull
Shoot a sheep
Hamstring a horse
But cull a cow a day
There’s no place left for the birds and bees
There’s no place left to play
For God’s sake please
Cull a cow a day
Bash a bull
Murder a mouse
Wrestle a rat
But cull a cow a day
Now it might mean a little less food
But we can use that as an excuse to
Wring the neck of a red-neck
How about flambé a fisherman
Shanghai a shooter
Better yet just string the buggers up
But Cull a cow a day
Bash a bull
Douse a donkey (with petrol)
Crush a cockroach
Doesn’t matter how or when or where
Just get out there and do it
Let’s show these environmental vandals
Cull a cow a day
It feels good to
Bash a bull
Slay a slug
Smash a snail
Just so long as you
Cull a cow a day
And whilst you’re at it don’t forget to
Flatten the flies and
Mash the mozzies
Even though they belong here
23/6 523k
The days are on the improve, left the NP early and got Bustards just outside the park at Floodway near Lochern NP, headed south at the main road and stopped at a Gully at Goon Goon south of Stonehenge where there were a few birds and got Hall’s Babbler, then stopped at 37km north of Wendorah and at 15km north of Windorah got a Grey Falcon circling above me I watched it for a short while as it seemed intent on me, before finishingadding Red-backed Kingfisher and White-backed Swallow. Headed down the Diamantina Development Rd and stopped at Cliff Ck Clifton Station, then took the Tobermory Rd west of Quilpie south, stopping at Moble Station 1 that has a ridge with Crimson Chat, Chestnut-breasted Quail-thrush and White-browed Treecreeper. Wanted to go through Tobermory Station but the owners told me I couldn’t get through so drove east along the Ingeberry Rd, stopping at Piastre Station 18km west of Toompine and camped on the Bulloo River west of Toompine and got Spotted Harrier. Another nice fine day with a few mozzies to contend with.
24/6 540k
It was always going to be hard to top yesterday, and so it was, after finishing off the survey drove south, stopping at Floodway south of Toompine, then over to Lake Bindegolly 1.5km west of causeway, and on to Lake Bindegolly which was full of water and the track to the campsite under water, lots of waterbirds, but I arrived too late for the bush birds which were elusive in the heat of the day. After my walk around in the warmth I needed a drink. On east to Hungerford Rd junction which had a shallow sheen of water. Over to Cunnamulla to get diesel and south towards Bourke, camped at Lednapper Crossing Rd about 40k north of Bourke which means I’m within striking distance of home tomorrow.
25/6 1007k
Headed down the Kidman Way, stopping at 108km north of Cobar and 88Km north of Hillston then home. Cost of fuel and food $1188
